What this error means

Sd (also shown as 5d on some displays) is Suds Detected—a suds lock fault. The washer sensed too much foam during drain and extended the pump time trying to break suds. Whirlpool pauses the cycle until suds drop or you intervene.

Common causes

  • Non-HE detergent or more than the recommended amount creating foam
  • Liquid fabric softener poured into the detergent tray instead of the softener cup
  • Cold water wash with detergent that needs warmer water to dissolve
  • Partially blocked drain path trapping sudsy water in the tub

  1. 1Cancel the cycle and run Rinse & Spin with no detergent on an empty drum
  2. 2Switch to HE detergent and use the marked lines inside the dispenser drawer
  3. 3Add one cup of white vinegar to an empty hot rinse to cut residual suds
