Whirlpool Washing Machine F24 Error Code
Tub temperature sensor reading invalid
What this error means
F24 means the tub temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) at the rear bottom of the outer tub sent an out-of-range reading. The washer cannot safely regulate wash heat or cold-water rinses without valid temperature feedback.
How F24 is detected
Heating faults such as F24 appear when the Whirlpool washing machine control energizes the bake element, broil element, gas valve, or drying heater but does not detect expected temperature rise within the monitoring window. On Whirlpool WFW9620HW, Whirlpool WFW560CHW, and similar variants, open heating elements, failed igniters on gas dryers and ranges, or welded heater relays on the control board produce similar symptoms.
Thermistor connector loose at the main control harness should be ruled out first. unplug the washer and inspect the thermistor plug near the tub bottom next to the heater. On electric ovens and dryers, test element continuity when cool; on gas appliances verify the ignitor glows for at least 15 seconds before the valve opens. Repeated F24 after confirming heat at the exhaust or oven cavity indicates a sensor or board issue rather than a simple element replacement.
Common causes
- Thermistor connector loose at the main control harness
- Damaged two-wire harness between tub and control panel
- Failed NTC thermistor reading open or shorted
- Water intrusion into the sensor connector from a tub seal leak
Step-by-step fixes
- 1Unplug the washer and inspect the thermistor plug near the tub bottom next to the heater
- 2Check continuity of the sensor harness from tub to CCU—repair any frayed wires
- 3Measure thermistor resistance at room temperature against the tech sheet spec for your model
- 4Power-cycle for two minutes and run a cold rinse to see if F24 clears without heat demand
When to call a technician
Replace the tub thermistor or main control if readings are out of spec after harness inspection.
Affected models
- Whirlpool WFW9620HW
- Whirlpool WFW560CHW
- Whirlpool WFW6620HC
Prevention & maintenance
- Preheat the oven only as directed and avoid foil lining the bottom—blocked airflow causes heat faults related to F24.
- Record when F24 appears in the cycle and whether it clears after a 60-second power reset on your Whirlpool washing machine—that detail speeds diagnosis if you call service.
- Keep the model and serial number from the rating plate when ordering parts for F24; Whirlpool uses multiple revisions with different harness lengths and board firmware.
- Photograph wiring connector orientation before disconnecting any component while troubleshooting F24; reversed plugs on pumps and valves cause immediate repeat faults.
