What this error means
Bosch E15 indicates the AquaStop leak protection system has detected water in the sealed base pan beneath the tub. A polystyrene float disk rises with even a few ounces of water and opens a switch that latches E15 on the display until the pan is dry and the leak source is addressed. The dishwasher will not fill or run pumps while E15 is active. This is not a drain fault (see E24) or a heat fault (see E09)—it is specifically base-pan water from a leak, overflow, or condensation accumulation that exceeded the float threshold.
How E15 is detected
Bosch SHPM88Z75N, SHEM63W55N, and SHX78B75UC integrate AquaStop as a passive mechanical float—no electronic leak sensor in the pan on most Ascenta and 500/800 series units. When the kick plate is removed, the white float assembly sits in the front-left base area on many models. Water from a loose circulation hose clamp, a split door gasket, a failed inlet valve drip after fill, or an overfill that escapes the tub edge lands in the pan and triggers E15 within seconds to minutes depending on leak rate.
E15 latches until power is removed and the pan is dried. Simply canceling the cycle rarely clears it if the float remains buoyant. Technicians tilt the entire dishwasher 30–45 degrees toward the front-right corner (model-dependent) to drain pooled water through a designed channel, then towel-dry the pan and reset the float. Homeowners can perform controlled tilt with the unit disconnected from power and supply, but two people are recommended—Bosch units are heavy and tilting without support can stress door hinges.
Finding the leak source separates a one-hour fix from repeat E15. Common SHPM88Z75N failures include the circulation pump outlet hose clamp at the sump, the water inlet valve body seep after fill shutoff, and spray arm hub seals that leak only under pressure during the wash phase. Inspect with a flashlight after tilting and drying: run a short fill test with the lower rack removed and watch the sump area, door bottom, and hose junctions for fresh droplets.
Do not bypass the float or disable AquaStop. E15 is doing its job—running the dishwasher with water in the pan risks floor damage and electrical hazard at base-level wiring. If no external leak is visible after drying, check for suds overflow from non-HE detergent; excessive foam can spill over the door lip into the pan and mimic a mechanical leak on the first occurrence.

Step-by-step fixes
- 1Unplug the dishwasher and turn off the hot supply valve under the sink before opening the kick plate.
- 2Remove the toe kick (usually two clip screws or quarter-turn fasteners); locate the polystyrene float in the front base and confirm it is raised—towel-dry the pan until the float drops freely.
- 3Tilt the unit 30–45° toward the front (support the door and use a second person); catch drained water in towels, then level and confirm the float rests down.
- 4Inspect the sump hose clamps visible from the front with a flashlight; tighten quarter-turn or worm clamps clockwise until snug—do not crush plastic barbs.
