Maytag Oven F17 Error Code

Probe or meat thermometer circuit fault

What this error means

F17 appears on models with a temperature probe jack. The ERC detected an open or short in the external meat probe circuit during convection roast or probe bake.

How F17 is detected

Maytag oven models lock the door or lid before energizing fill, heat, or high-speed spin. F17 means the latch switch never sent a "locked" signal to the main control, or the lock motor did not complete its travel. On Maytag MEW7630FZ, Maytag MER8800FZ, and similar variants, clothing caught in the gasket, a misaligned strike, or a failed latch assembly are the most common mechanical causes—not the board itself.

Inspect the door gasket perimeter and strike alignment before replacing the latch. Probe not fully seated in the jack is reported frequently on this code. After correcting mechanical issues, insert the probe firmly until it clicks. If the latch clicks but F17 persists, the door lock switch or wiring harness to the control board likely needs testing with a multimeter.

Do not force the door open during an active cycle; wait for the lock to release when the board de-energizes the lock motor—usually two to three minutes after canceling power on most Maytag units.

Common causes

  • Probe not fully seated in the jack
  • Damaged probe cable from kinking
  • Jack wiring loose at the ERC
  • Probe tip damaged from high heat exposure

Step-by-step fixes

  1. 1Insert the probe firmly until it clicks
  2. 2Test with a known-good Maytag probe if available
  3. 3Inspect the jack behind the console for loose wires
  4. 4Cancel probe mode and use timed bake as a workaround

When to call a technician

Good probe with F17 at the jack needs receptacle or ERC input circuit repair.

Affected models

  • Maytag MEW7630FZ
  • Maytag MER8800FZ
  • Maytag MGR8800FZ

Prevention & maintenance

  • Wipe the door gasket weekly and avoid overloading items against the seal—F17 often starts as a slow leak or latch misalignment.
  • Record when F17 appears in the cycle and whether it clears after a 60-second power reset on your Maytag oven—that detail speeds diagnosis if you call service.
  • Keep the model and serial number from the rating plate when ordering parts for F17; Maytag uses multiple revisions with different harness lengths and board firmware.
  • Photograph wiring connector orientation before disconnecting any component while troubleshooting F17; reversed plugs on pumps and valves cause immediate repeat faults.
