LG Dishwasher OE Error Code

Outlet error—drain pump ran but water did not leave within timeout

What this error means

LG dishwasher OE means Outlet Error: the drain pump energized for the programmed duration but the control did not detect sufficient water removal from the sump. This is specific to LG dishwashers—do not confuse it with LG washing machine OE (overflow) or Samsung OE codes. On LDFN4542S, LDTS5552S, and LDP6810SS models, OE typically reflects a restricted filter, blocked drain hose, failed drain pump impeller, or improper drain hose routing without the required high loop. The pump part 5859DD9001B is the common OEM drain motor replacement when mechanical clearing fails.

How OE is detected

LG dishwashers monitor drain progress through pressure or timing algorithms depending on series. When the sump still holds water after the pump runs—often 90 seconds to two minutes—OE latches on the display. Unlike Bosch E24 wording, LG OE explicitly flags outlet path failure. Start at the tub-floor filter assembly: LG uses a flat filter cover and cylindrical fine filter; debris under the cover prevents the impeller from drawing water even when the pump motor spins.

Drain hose routing is critical on LG LDFN4542S and similar: the hose must rise at least 30 cm (roughly 12 inches) from the floor connection before descending to the disposal or tailpiece. A missing high loop allows back-siphon from the sink or disposal, refilling the sump after the pump stops and causing OE on the next drain attempt. Zip-tie the hose to the cabinet top or air-gap fitting, not low on the rear panel.

LG provides a force-drain procedure on many models: press and hold Delicate plus Dual Control (or the combination listed on your model sticker) for three seconds to activate manual pump out without a full cycle. Use this after clearing the filter to verify pump output into the sink drain before re-running a wash. If force drain works but OE returns mid-cycle, suspect intermittent hose blockage or a weak pump that cannot sustain flow under wash-arm back-pressure.

When replacing the drain pump 5859DD9001B ($60–120), access is from beneath after removing the toe panel and tipping the unit slightly backward with protection on the floor. Mark wire harness orientation, twist-lock the pump bayonet counterclockwise to remove, and clear the sump cavity of glass before installing the new pump—LG impellers chip easily if debris remains.

Common causes

  • Tub floor filter and sump area clogged with food debris restricting inlet to drain pump
  • Drain hose lacking 30 cm minimum high loop, allowing backflow from sink or disposal
  • Kinked drain hose behind dishwasher or under sink after recent cabinet adjustment
  • Garbage disposal clog or full knockout obstruction at the shared drain port
  • Drain pump impeller cracked or jammed by seeds, broken glass, or toothpick fragments
  • Failed drain pump motor 5859DD9001B—hums without moving water or silent with good harness voltage
  • Air gap (if installed) clogged at the vent cap, blocking atmospheric break in drain path

Step-by-step fixes

  1. 1Unplug the dishwasher, remove lower rack, and lift the flat filter cover; pull the cylindrical filter and rinse all mesh layers under hot water.
  2. 2Reach into the sump cavity with a flashlight; remove visible debris; rotate the impeller gently clockwise to confirm it moves without grinding.
  3. 3Trace the drain hose from the pump outlet to the sink; create or verify a high loop peaking at least 30 cm above the floor connection; secure with a cabinet screw tab.
  4. 4Disconnect the hose at the disposal or tailpiece; drain residual water into a pan; flush the hose with water from a funnel to dislodge grease plugs.
  5. 5Run LG force drain: hold Delicate + Dual Control three seconds (confirm combo on your LDP6810SS label); listen for pump operation and water at sink.
  6. 6If OE persists, remove toe kick, lay towels, access pump from underside, disconnect harness, twist pump body counterclockwise to unlock, and inspect impeller for damage.
  7. 7Install replacement pump 5859DD9001B with sump clear, bayonet aligned, twist clockwise until locked, reconnect harness, and run rinse-only test before loading dishes.

When to call a technician

Call service if force drain fails silently (no pump hum) or hums without water movement after filter and hose are verified clear. Harness or main PCB drain relay faults require live voltage testing. Provide model LDFN4542S or LDTS5552S from the door rating plate when ordering the 5859DD9001B pump to match revision.

Prevention & maintenance

  • Clean the LG tub floor filter weekly in heavy-use households—OE rarely appears when the sump inlet stays clear.
  • Maintain the 30 cm drain hose high loop after any dishwasher pull-forward for floor cleaning.
  • Run disposal before starting the dishwasher when sharing a drain port to prevent back-pressure OE faults.
